The Second Practice
Listen to Him
If God is really with us, then He’s also speaking.
This practice is about learning to listen.
Not in a mystical way, but in a real-life, everyday kind of way. It’s simply about paying attention and trusting that the Holy Spirit is able to lead you.
Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice; I know them and they follow me."
John 10:27
What this means
Listening is a normal part of walking with Jesus, and it’s something you can grow in over time.
Fruitful disciple-makers often describe hearing from God. They don’t just study the Bible or make good plans—they follow the Spirit’s lead in everyday life.
This usually doesn’t look dramatic. It happens in normal conversations, unexpected encounters, or moments of clarity that feel too timely to ignore.
This isn’t about chasing experiences. It’s about being aware that God is present and able to speak, then learning to respond when He does.
Listen up!
Not everyone hears best sitting still. Go for a walk or drive without music or distraction, and just be available.
Use motion as a way to listen. Let your body settle while your spirit stays open.
You could say: “Lord, I’m listening as I go. Feel free to interrupt my thoughts.”
God often speaks through others. Sometimes, what someone else shares can confirm something or open a new perspective.
When someone shares, ask God silently what He wants you to notice or say.
You could say: “God, what are You saying to me through this?”
Before anything else rushes in, take a quiet moment with God. The day doesn’t begin with a to-do list—it begins with presence.
Ask God to speak before you start your day. Don’t force it. Just invite Him in.
You could say: “Jesus, I’m listening. Is there anything You want to say before I move into today?”
It’s normal to wonder if you’re doing it right. These are some of the most honest questions people ask as they learn to hear God’s voice—and some gentle reminders for the journey.
That’s a common question—and a good one. The more you listen, the more you’ll learn to recognize what sounds like Him. His voice often brings peace, clarity, conviction, or alignment with Scripture. And He’s patient as you learn.
That’s okay. Keep asking. Keep showing up. Sometimes God speaks in ways we don’t expect. Pay attention to what’s happening around you, in Scripture, or through others. Silence doesn’t mean absence.
That can be discouraging. Sometimes we hear clearly but miss the timing or meaning. Even in Scripture, God’s promises often took time. Stay open, stay curious, and keep the conversation going.
Test it. Scripture, the character of Jesus, and wise community are your filters. God’s voice brings consistency and peace. If you're unsure, slow down and ask again—He’s not in a rush.
